Residents of a block of flats on the lsle of Man were delighted when their failing timber windows were replaced with Sheerframe windows without the building losing any of its character.
The 1930s built low-rise flats, which are owned and maintained by the Douglas Corporation, featured original timber sash windows which had become rotten and potentially unsafe. Nearly 200 top hung
Sheerframe system 7000 casement windows from systems company L.B. Plastics were installed, improving the look and thermal efficiency of the building, reducing noise, and ensuring the safety of the residents.
David Halsall, assistant borough surveyor at the Douglas Corporation, commented, 'We had no specific planning regulations to follow when choosing a replacement window, but were keen that the overall style and look of the building should be kept as close to the original as possible. The thick glazing bar on the Sheerframe casement window has allowed us to give the illusion of a sash window whilst incorporating all the advantages of a casement window.'
In addition to the replacement window programme, the Douglas Corporation is fitting central heating systems into the block, increasing the need for a thermally efficient window. This Sheerframe window system is part of the enhanced thermal performance range which includes four chamber design and come with co-extruded weatherseals to maximise weather performance.
